I did have to have a total hysterectomy. I knew about the fibroids, the enlarged uterus, poly-cystic ovaries, and history of cervical cancer. What was a surprise, because I never had really painful periods, was the endometriosis. I was riddled with it. In the uterus, outside the uterus, on the ovaries, on the bladder. One of the "cysts" turned out to be an endometrioma. Plus lots of old blood which my doctor said was the color of chocolate. Lovely, but that won't make me stop eating chocolate!
